Follow me home.

Toyota Venza

Toyota Venza.

Audi 2013: Audi S1, Audi A2

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray: Everything there is to know

2013 is shaping up to be a frantic year for Chevrolet, with over a dozen reveals and launches on its calendar. New iterations of the most financially and emotionally important vehicles to the brand are launching little more than a few weeks apart – the 2014 Silverado (financially) and the 2014 Corvette (emotionally). Better than any other models, these two lines form the bedrock for the Bowtie's identity and bookend its portfolio. The pickup is the backbone of the brand's profits (and indeed, those of General Motors) and the Corvette is its spiritual core and flagship.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray will slay a few sacred cows.
It's fair to say that upon first impression, the new Silverado didn't exactly bowl over the assembled media – or the Autoblog commenteriat – with what many see as largely incremental improvements. (This, at a time when rivals are rewriting the book on what it means to be a full-size pickup). By contrast, the 2014 Corvette Stingray will slay a few sacred cows along the way to what is its arguably its biggest model-over-model change in decades. And at least at first glance, the Vette appears all the better for it.

We'll get to the specifics of its genetic makeup and appearance in a minute, but for now, you'll want to focus on these key bits: The all-new LT1 small-block V8 holds on to the same 6.2-liter displacement as the C6, here producing 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque backed by either a seven-speed manual or a six-speed paddleshift automatic. And although GM has yet to release the car's weight (we only know it won't be under 3,000 pounds as previously rumored), it's promising a better power-to-weight ratio than the Porsche 911 Carrera and Audi R8. In fact, Chevy pledges the C7 will run from 0-60 in less than four seconds and Z51 Performance Package examples will achieve cornering grip of over one g right out of the box. Further, 60-0 braking distances are said to be consistent with that of the outgoing Grand Sport and so are its lap times – impressive for a standard model.

Aesthetically, the car seen here is a big departure, though from most angles, it's still quite clearly a Corvette. About the same size as before, the C7 should nevertheless look significantly smaller in person thanks to its shrink-wrapped sheetmetal (err, fiberglass), which is much more angular. The front end is pure Corvette, with more detailed HID headlamps and much greater surface definition and tension in the hood, which, like the roof panel, is rendered in carbon fiber to shave weight. For reference, the C7 looks to be about the same size dimensionally as the 911, albeit with a significantly longer 106.7-inch wheelbase than the rear-engined German.

The biggest change to the C7 is its rear end, which is unlike any Corvette before it.
The C7's profile is the same basic view that's been around since the C4, with one big exception – the institution of a secondary side window, something not seen on a Corvette since 1962. The move was necessitated by air intakes mounted atop the rear fenders that feed the rear-mounted heat exchangers on automatic or Z51-equipped models (more on both in a moment). The ducts also mean the backlight is no longer a wraparound piece of glass, it's more flat and tapered. Otherwise, the side view is the same long dash-to-axle layout, albeit again, with more muscled contours to the skin, particularly in the body's lower third.

The biggest change aesthetically to the C7 is undoubtedly its rear end, which is utterly unlike any Corvette before it. It's likely to be the new design's biggest source of controversy, as well – there's no getting around it, the unusual taillamp treatment is going to be the crux of most styling discussions. Not only are the quad lenses not round, they are clustered together tightly, angular and have real depth and interest thanks in part to their lens internals and because they are surrounded by unusual new vents. There are new vents in the extremities of the blacked-out bumper, too, all part of a massively reworked aerodynamics strategy that has been "blatantly lifted from the C6R" racecar. Combined with the new side window and roofline, we almost see a bit of Nissan GT-R in the shallow rear three-quarter view, but there's plenty here that's distinctive, including four Howitzer-sized exhaust outlets.

2013 Acura ILX 2.4

Acura's experiment with niche models has failed. Competing in the luxury car business by filling white space with product just didn't work for the Japanese automaker. In place of slow-selling models like its ZDX and quirky first-gen RDX, the mindset at Acura has recently switched to more conventional products with vastly improved volume potential. The redesigned 2013 RDX, for example, sold almost as many units in 2012 as it did in 2010 and 2011 combined, and the all-new 2013 ILX has sold more units each month – since going on sale in May – than Acura sold in ZDXs and RLs in all of last year.

While the redesigned RDX is a crucial product to compete with luxury compact crossovers, the ILX might be the most important new product for Acura, as a growing number of premium makes are starting to realize the importance of upscale entry-level compact cars. Ironically, this segment was a pivotal part of the brand's success in the 1980s and '90s thanks to the Integra, but Acura completely abandoned the genre when it killed off the RSX coupe in 2006. The addition of the ILX not only gives Acura a competitive small car again, it also drops the brand's entry price by almost $5,000.

Like the Honda Civic to which it's closely related, the 2013 Acura ILX is offered with three powertrain flavors (base 2.0, ILX 2.4 and Hybrid), and while our First Drive gave us some seat time in the base ILX 2.0, this time we got to spend a full week with the sportier ILX 2.4 – Acura's version of the Civic Si. The ILX is positioned in a weird in-between market that includes premium small cars like the Buick Verano, Audi A3 and Lexus CT, but it also sits at the upper end of some well-equipped non-luxury models like the Ford Focus Titanium. With this in mind, and with keys in hand, we aimed to see how the ILX stacks up against other premium compacts – as well as its predecessors.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

The idea of a super ute has always been a crazy one. Of all the vehicle types on which to base a high-performance machine, one that was originally intended to go off road and later evolved into the towering family wagons we use today would not be our first choice. And yet, time and again we see that auto enthusiasts – even ones calling the shots at major automakers – will make anything go quicker and faster if given the chance. That's how the first Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 was born back in 2006, and Chrysler has again seen fit to apply this extreme treatment to its best-selling SUV – despite the fact that its mere existence seemingly violates every facet of Jeep's rugged off-road image.

But the small segment of super utes to which the Grand Cherokee SRT8 belongs has gotten extremely competitive in the past few years while Chrysler clawed its way out of bankruptcy. Sport utility vehicles from BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz have spawned unholy super utes with enough horsepower to embarrass supercars from just a few years ago.

The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 doesn't play by German rules, though. Despite its well-timed redesign that gives SRT guys and gals an opportunity to leapfrog their rivals, they instead practiced restraint, ignored winning the war on paper and upgraded their entry in the areas requested most by their customers.

Styling was not a source of complaint from customers of the first-gen Grand Cherokee SRT8. The original model that sold from 2006 through 2010 was brutishly blocky, its design seemingly inspired by the head of a sledgehammer. This new SRT8 is forced to wear the smoother, softer lines of the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee, so it loses that cast-iron quality of the original.

2012 Infiniti QX56

I did something terrible the other day. I drove to the hardware store and bought incandescent light bulbs. I stood there in the aisle for a few extra minutes, staring at the compact fluorescents mocking me in their "be green" packaging, thinking about the several burned out incandescent bulbs in my basement and wondering how long the new ones I held in my hand might last. Better grab another box, just to be sure – government mandate has incandescents being phased out starting in January. I kept from making eye contact with the cashier while I paid and slunk out to my car.

So I'm a hypocrite, a self-professed environmentalist who can't even do this one simple thing to save the planet. But I am just not interested in spending a weekend replacing all the dimmer switches throughout the lower level of my house, and compact fluorescents don't work in those fixtures.

Which brings us to the 2012 Infiniti QX56. From a certain perspective, this 16-mile-per-gallon, V8-powered, body-on-frame SUV is an incandescent light bulb – a holdover from last decade, before the enactment of necessarily draconian fuel economy standards. But as my esteemed colleague Zach Bowman wrote in his First Drive of the QX, "you can't tow 8,500 pounds with a Toyota Prius." Neither can you fit a driver and up to seven passengers into one, not even the new Prius V.

I'd like to point to the technological marvel that solves the fuel-efficient family tow rig conundrum, but the solutions available right now are limited. We'll get to those alternatives presently, but for now, let's agree that new technology has a way of only solving part of the problem. So in this case, if you want to tow big stuff and you've got a big enough brood that you need three rows of seats – and you're ready and willing to spend big cash – the QX is as good as it's going to get.

Review: 2012 Ford Focus Titanium

Ironically named little car, the Ford Focus. While you could surely argue we're drawing too literal a line between the car and its moniker, we have to chuckle a little when we recall just how far afield Ford drifted with its compact offering over the last several years. Suffice it to say that Ford lost its way somewhere after the original Focus was introduced as a so-called 'world car' back in 1999. At the time, the spunky Focus shared the same C170 platform no matter where in the world it was sold.

Sadly, such platform sharing diverged in 2005 as the United States made do with the aging C170 chassis in a reduced number of bodystyles while the rest of the world received a new model based on the brand spankin' new C1 platform. That new architecture debuted to rave reviews from the international motoring press while the aging North American Focus doddered off to live among the also-rans. A few short years later, with the global economy in the doldrums and fuel mileage sitting atop many consumers' automotive wishlists, it wasn't long before the Blue Oval found itself standing flat-footed without a class-competitive compact in its home market. Many tears were shed in the form of lost dollar signs over the ensuing years, until Ford finally promised to make the Focus a truly global car for the 2012 model year.

And we're happy to report that the 2012 Ford Focus is several orders of magnitude superior to the model it replaces. How so? Keep reading to find out.

We'll start with its exterior appearance. Instead of telling you how the 2012 Focus was drawn up with smooth, flowing lines and more than a few traces of Ford's Kinetic design language, we'll instead share a little story.

After a few days of daily driving duties, our Tuxedo Black Focus sedan was sorely in need of a good washing. After finishing the deed and taking a few moments to admire the shiny metallic flecks in the bright Arizona sun, we noticed we weren't alone... three burly-looking, bearded workers and their supervisor had stopped toiling away at whatever project they had been assigned and were talking amongst themselves about our car. Eye contact was made, so they gaggle of laborers decided to come take a closer look.

What transpired could best be described as a Focus Love Fest. A traditional walk-around was performed (several times, actually), doors were opened and shut and specifications were debated. Finally, a general consensus was reached: "That there is a nice car."

2013 BMW 750Li

2013 BMW 750Li

For a while now, the absolute and rather uncontested king of big luxury executive sedan sales worldwide has been the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Among the obvious competition, there has been an almost unspoken agreement that this is so, and that it shall remain so for our lifetimes. Clearly, this is regardless of the fact that the motoring press – i.e. we the so-called "experts" – have generally preferred this generation of Audi A8/S8, or the sporting BMW 7 Series in its various trims. But hey, what do we know?

Deliveries of this midlife-update BMW 750Li to US dealers began back at the end of September, and we waited deliberately until now to delve deeply into it. Visually, aside from some small aesthetic changes, there is little difference on the surface between this 2013 model and the 2012 model it replaces, the main change being that it gets the latest edition of BMW's iDrive system, which in software terms is version 4.2.

We'll get to that, but there have actually been upgrades to the twin-turbocharged V8 ("N63B44" to those in the know) that renders this big Bimmer more of a sports car in its class, even in the long-wheelbase form tested here. Output is up by over eleven percent to 443 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, torque now stands at 479 pound-feet for a more modest gain of just under seven percent between 2,000 and 4,500 revs. Acceleration to 60 miles per hour is claimed at 4.7 seconds using the eight-speed Steptronic automatic, a time that seems almost freakishly quick for a 4,660-pounder that stretches 17.1 feet from bumper to bumper.

2012 BMW 335i

2012 BMW 335i

The 328i is better than the 335i.

We are not the only ones claiming that the entry-level BMW 3 Series, fitted with a clamorous lightweight turbocharged four-cylinder engine, is more agile and tossable than its turbocharged six-cylinder sibling – it appears to many that the segment leader has been displaced by its weaker brother.

Well, maybe.

That big 'maybe,' and a whole bunch of its little 'maybe' associates, are what convinced us to grab the keys to a brand-new six-cylinder BMW and take it home for a week. Our objective was to determine why the muscular 335i, long the performance benchmark of compact sport sedans, was getting its tailpipes handed to it by its four-banger kin.

To solve the riddle, we put more than 1,500 miles on a brand-new 335i Sport configured with a six-speed manual transmission. Of course, we liked much of what we experienced, as the redesign fits the 3 Series very well. But we also exposed a few holes in its once-impenetrable armor – some big enough to let two fewer cylinders slip by. Has the quickest and highest-performing of the non-M 3 Series models really lost its top spot on the palace throne? If so, why would someone still want a 335i?

2012 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG

2012 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG
Sometime before the end of this century, humans will travel to Mars. The longest manned journey ever attempted will take the explorers at least 34 million miles over the course of many months, at best. The vehicle necessary to support such an odyssey will need to be spacious, comfortable, technically advanced, incredibly safe and very powerful.

Before plotting the future spacecraft's design, we suggest the engineers take a close look at the 2012 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG for ideas.

Of course, we don't think the S63 is fit for interplanetary travel – micrometeorites and ultraviolet radiation would likely wreak havoc on its expensive and vogue matte finish Magno Platinum paint – but we do feel it is one of the most spacious and luxurious rocket ships that someone outside of a space agency can put in their personal hangar.

During our week with the AMG-tuned S-Class, its four wheels never left the surface of planet Earth, but we did load it up and make a long weekend trek to Palm Springs. How did this twin-turbocharged sedan handle the long outing and subsequent run into the mountains? Does it drive ponderously, or is the big Benz agile and athletic? Most importantly, what's not to like with this two-and-one-half ton almighty giant?

BMW 7 Series Facelift Expected Early 2013

BMW 7 Series Facelift

The current BMW 7Series available in the market is soon going to be replaced by the newly enhanced model, which essentially is a facelifted version of the fifth generation car. Unlike the wide portfolio offered in other markets, BMW India will only introduce the 730Ld, however a petrol engined model can’t be ruled out for a later launch in the year.

Visually, the major changes to the BMW 730Ld have been focused on the front and these include the new LED headlights, new kidney grille, revised front bumper, side indicators incorporated on the bottom of the ORVMs and a thin chrome strip connecting the two slim reflectors in the rear apron. Apart from that, the 7 Series retains its quintessential chiseled styling and proportions including the long hood and set back passenger cabin. Interior changes are limited and the only visible ones include the narrower front seats and a new 1,200 watt Bang and Olufsen high end surround sound system with 16 speakers. Incidentally, BMW decided to narrow the front seats in order to offer a more airy feel to the cabin.

BMW 7 Series Facelift

Powering the BMW 730Ld is a 2993cc, in line 6 cylinder diesel unit. The engine itself is not new; however it has been tweaked for overall performance and enhanced efficiency. Fitted with a turbocharger, variable intake geometry and piezo injectors, the engine now delivers 258Hp @ 4000 rpm as opposed to 231 horses earlier, and torque has also gone up from 520Nm to 560Nm which kicks in as low as 1500rpm. Unlike the earlier car, the new car is now mated to an all new eight speed automatic with steptronic and is capable of going from 0-100km/h in 6.2 seconds, which is approximately 1.7 seconds faster than its predecessor!

Quintessentially pinned against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the 7 Series (Read: New BMW 7 Series First Drive) will have to battle it out against the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ as well. With all the cars being as accomplished as one another, the choice for a fancy set of wheels is only going to get tougher! Set for an early 2013 debut, the new BMW 730Ld is expected to be priced anywhere between Rs 87-95 lakhs, ex-showroom, Delhi.

Quick Spin: 2011 Dodge Avenger

2011 Dodge Avenger
Chrysler has chosen vastly different fates for its Sebring and the Dodge Avenger, despite the two essentially being identical vehicles. While the Sebring underwent a complete personality makeover for 2011 and emerged with new sheetmetal and a new nameplate to match, the Avenger was left to soldier on with more conservative tweaks. The Dodge version of Chrysler’s midsize sedan still wears the same basic body lines as before, masking over the significant adjustments to the vehicle’s interior, drivetrain and suspension. While the Chrysler 200 may be stealing (okay, borrowing) the show, the 2011 Avenger is no less improved, at least when equipped with the company’s new 3.6-liter V6 engine.
With 283 horsepower and respectable fuel economy, the new six-cylinder turns the Avenger into a vehicle that no longer takes its driving cues from capital punishment, though lower-rung trim levels don’t fare as well. Buyers who opt for the old 2.4-liter four-cylinder will be met with visions from the vehicle’s less-than-award-winning past, including plenty of engine vibration and fuel economy that’s not on par with new hardware coming out from the competition. All this begs the question: Is there room for both the Dodge Avenger and the Chrysler 200 under the new company tent?
The 2011 Dodge Avenger has eschewed the full nose-job of its Chrysler cousin in favor of a simple fascia tweak. The new front bumper cap is slightly rounder compared to that of the 2010 model and it accommodates the redesigned Dodge corporate grille well. With that simple change, the Avenger now looks a bit more feminine, you but you won’t hear us complaining. The rear now wears a similarly subtle redesign and is joined by new LED taillights.

We aren’t exactly wild about the new lamp design, but they fall in line with similar units on vehicles like the 2011 Dodge Journey. There’s something to be said for brand cohesiveness. We would have preferred to see the back of the Avenger receive a quick cleanup akin to that of the 200. In our estimation, tricks like shaving the vehicle’s badges and using simple design tweaks to integrate the trunk lid and the tail lights would go a long way toward making the Avenger a more attractive vehicle.

2011 Lexus IS F

2011 Lexus IS F
Mid-course corrections are a common occurrence when speaking about high-flying commercial aircraft and oceangoing freighters – both are often pushed off track by errant winds and powerful currents. But when it comes to automobiles, a mid-course correction can be a sign that something was wrong the moment a new model was unveiled.
The Lexus IS F was introduced at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. The compact, high-performance sports sedan was a fresh Japanese alternative to the Audi RS4, BMW M3, Cadillac CTS-V and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Yet, despite a full suite of performance enhancements that lifted it above and well beyond the standard IS, the 416-horsepower rear-wheel-drive sedan arrived lacking the refinement and performance to properly battle its competition.
Lexusreviewed the situation, noted it was not on the proper path and made a series of corrections this past year. The 2011 IS-F four-door boasts a host of improvements, both inside and out, promising a smoother ride, better handling, improved ergonomics and a freshened exterior. So is the Lexus IS F firmly back on track?
The Lexus IS-F was a big step up from its six-cylinder IS 250 and IS 350 siblings. Not only did it pack eight-cylinder power, but its brakes, suspension and tires were tuned for serious enthusiasts. Complementing the mechanical upgrades, Lexus also made a slew of cosmetic changes to the bodywork, and fitted the cabin with special sport seats and other performance kit. While we liked the IS F when we first spent time with it in 2009, we weren’t completely blown away. Aside from its lack of personality (blame Japanese sterility), much of our frustration was directed at its sport-tuned suspension, which was much too firm for our tastes. It seemed intent on rattling the amalgam fillings from our jaws. “While the Lexus sport sedan is great in the canyons, a joy to toss into the corners, straight-line driving on anything but polished marble will leave you and your occupants wondering how to turn the methodical oscillations off.” We summed things up by saying, “…the IS F is an excellent candidate for electronically controlled dampers.”

2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

What to make of the fact that the Mercedes-Benz Galendewagen has seen a nearly fifty percent increase in sales from 2009 to 2011? The fact that this vehicle, which was originally designed for military, not civilian, use, is now more than thirty years old (it dates from 1979) apparently does little to deter its well-heeled buyers. Nor does the ancient SUV's appalling gas mileage (13 mpg combined city/highway, in the case of the G550). The fact that a GL, or an ML, is far roomier inside also appears to be irrelevant.

One assumes that most of those buyers rarely if ever use the G-wagen's three (!) locking differentials, or seriously tap into this vehicle's incredible off-road skill set -- which includes the ability to climb, or descend, a 45-degree slope. That off-road ability is the only rational reason to choose a G-class over one of Mercedes' far more modern SUVs. But rationality probably has little to do with a G-class purchase.
After three decades with only minimal changes, the G-wagen has emerged as an icon. The boxy design is now seen as a throwback style statement. This utilitarian vehicle has morphed into a wild-child image machine.
That idea that outrageous is a core component of the G-wagen's appeal is supported by this statistic: The AMG version has traditionally accounted for a majority of G-wagen sales. In no other Mercedes model line is the AMG version so popular.

Model year 2013, then, will be an important one for G-wagen clientele. After the G55 AMG disappeared for 2012 (only the G550 is currently sold in the United States), the AMG G-class returns, in the form of the new, 2013 G63 AMG.
Mercedes may be loath to mess with the G-wagen's design, but there's always room for a little more bling. Thus the 2013 model welcomes a strip of LEDs under the round headlights, red brake calipers, twenty-inch wheels, and a more aggressive lower fascia punctuated by three huge air intakes.
Mercedes also continues to build on the amusing dichotomy between the G's militaristic exterior and its Sybaratic interior. New interior features include a console-mounted knob controller for the standard Comand multi-media interface; a new iPad-style TFT-screen that sprouts out of the dash; and available Designo interior that decks out the upright cabin in quilted leather. A new electrical architecture allows such up-to-the-minute conveniences as internet access, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot assist.
Having bowed out with the old, supercharged, 5.5-liter V-8 under the hood, the AMG G-class returns with the new, 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 (having skipped over the normally aspirated 6.2-liter engine seen in most other AMG models). Now cranking out 544 hp (up from 507) and 560 pound-feet of torque, the burly new V-8 still emits a deep rumble from its side-exiting exhausts but also -- amusingly -- comes with auto stop/start. From rest, the AMG V-8 can have this tall, heavy beast hurtling along at 62 mph in only 5.4 seconds. Hauling it back down again are new brakes that feature six-piston calipers up front. Mercedes claims that the suspension has been revised for more dynamic handling -- too bad the steering, which is unbelievably slow and full of friction, discourages any exploration of the G's enhanced cornering abilities.
The greater disappointment for G-wagen buyers, however, probably would be that the G63 is not, in fact, the zenith of G-wagen outrageousness. Two other variants are even more absurd: the two-door convertible (complete with power top); and the G65 AMG, powered by a biturbo V-12 with 612 hp. Unfortunately, the two wildest G-wagens are not available in the United States.

Hyundai Tech: Sonatas of Two Different Flavors

Hyundai is expanding its Sonata lineup seemingly with something for everyone. In honoring this South Korean company’s press embargo, I cannot share driving impressions just yet, but I can spill the technical beans. And there are lots of them.
The 2.0T Sonata, as its name suggests, is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. Hyundai avoided the GDI moniker that could have legitimately been attached, as this inline-4 also features direct injection of its gasoline. Now I admit there’s nothing particular novel about having a turbo-enhanced direct-injected engine of small displacement do the job of a traditional—and more fuel-consumptive—V-6. But Hyundai engineers have been busy in perfecting this concept in several distinctly innovative ways.
For one, the turbo’s compressor housing is actually part of the engine’s exhaust manifold. What’s more, the casting that integrates these two elements is of austenite stainless steel. It’s quite a technical achievement to use this material, but it’s ideal for this application because of its thermal properties of getting exhaust heat efficiently to the turbo’s compressor. And, of course, having the two components integrated into one only enhances this.
Factoid: It’s both the kinetic energy of exhaust flow as well as the thermal energy of its expanding gases that drive the turbo’s compressor and its attached forced-induction-producing impeller. Hyundai’s integrated design enhances both aspects.
The Sonata’s turbo is a twin-scroll type as well. That is, its porting and vanes are designed to exploit two separate paths of exhaust flow, from cylinders 1 and 4 and from cylinders 2 and 3. This way, pulses during inherent four-stroke operation don’t trip over each other. This twin-scroll idea isn’t unique to Hyundai (the 2.0-liter Buick Regal uses it as well). But the Sonata’s 274 bhp versus the Regal’s 220 suggests the other wizardry involved.
Hyundai engineers figure that optimized forced induction plus direct injection are worth around a 22-percent kick in torque, from 220 to 269 lb.-ft. over a broad rpm range, with the twin scrolls accounting for perhaps half this. There’s lots of synergy involved here as well: Direct injection provides a cooler charge of fuel; optimized intercooling does its magic as well with the forced induction of air. They combine to produce the 2.0T’s 137 bhp/liter, a figure that’s quite amazing in a car in the $24K-$29K range. More details on this and my driving impressions once the embargo has lifted.
The Sonata Hybrid also carries some very neat tech, specifically in its parallel-hybrid drivetrain, lithium-polymer battery pack and optimized thermal management. Hyundai engineers also pointedly used the term “fun to drive” in describing their hybrid design and development.
Its 2.4-liter gasoline engine operates on an Atkinson Cycle; more correctly, like other hybrids, on a innovatively valve-timed simulation of this short-compression/long-expansion concept. A clutch separates this powerplant from a 41-hp electric motor which resides directly ahead of a 6-speed automatic transmission eventually sending twist to the car’s front wheels.
Note the difference between Hyundai’s hybrid layout and those of Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion or Nissan Altima (these three, certainly technical siblings in more ways than one). The Hyundai’s 6-speed automatic is in marked contrast to the other’s CVTs, one claimed benefit being enhanced highway performance. What’s more, as its operation is integrated with the electric motor’s, this automatic has no need for an energy-sapping torque converter.
Unlike these other cars’ nickel/metal hydride battery technology, the Sonata Hybrid’s is lithium-polymer. Newer technology, it offers improvements in everything from power and energy density to weight to volume to cycle life to characteristics of state of charge.
This last one, SOC, for short, is particularly interesting in Hyundai’s optimization of hybrid operation. For reasons of durability, any battery profits from gentle chemical action—not being discharged too deeply, not being charged to its full capacity, with SOC being a measure of this. Typical nickel/metal hydride batteries owe their life-of-the-car longevity to an SOC window as narrow as 15 percent; e.g., operating no less than 50 percent SOC, no more than 65 percent SOC. Hyundai engineers say lithium technology can accept a wider range, say 50 to 75 SOC, with no degradation of battery durability.
What’s more, innovative thermal management stretches this further: In cold weather, for example, the Sonata Hybrid’s SOC window can expand to as wide as 45 percent, from 45 to 90 SOC. One benefit of this is balancing the inherent loss of battery performance concomitant with lower ambient temperatures. Despite these exemplary SOC characteristics, Hyundai engineers expect to confirm battery longevity on the order of 250,000 miles or more.
A last example of Hyundai’s thermal management and efficiency. Compared with other Sonatas, the Hybrid has a larger air intake; this, to handle hybrid powertrain cooling in extremes such as Death Valley at summer’s peak. On the other hand, such a gaping snout is detrimental to aerodynamics. To optimize matters, the Sonata Hybrid has what engineers term an Active Air Flap. As its name suggests, this gizmo automatically adjusts the airflow. It’s wide open at low vehicle speed and high coolant temperature; it closes as speeds increase or coolant temperature drops. Engineers figure there’s a 10-percent reduction in CD with this, all the more impressive when you hear that the car’s inherent drag is an already low 0.25.
My driving impressions of the Sonata Hybrid can appear on October 18 (one day before my birthday—please, no presents).

BMW recalls 3,422 cars in India to fix battery cable cover problem

BMW 2010 5 series for India

BMW has recalled 3,422 units of its 5- and 6-Series models in India over a possible problem with the battery cable cover in the boot. The recalls are part of a global exercise involving 1.3 million units of the aforesaid models built between 2003 and 2010 while the move in India will cover models from 2007 to 2010 only. According to the German car maker, the battery cable cover inside the boot may be mounted improperly, which could result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and in some cases, cause a fire. “The screw beneath the cover can come loose and create problems in the electrical system that can lead to technical difficulties,” a BMW spokesperson is reported to have said.

No accidents or injuries have been reported so far and less than 1 percent of the vehicles have shown symptoms. The free-of-charge repair work will take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour and would be undertaken in authorised workshops.

The 3,422 units recalled in India comprise only a small fraction of the total recalls worldwide. BMW has called back about 3.68 lakh cars in the US, 2.93 lakh cars in Germany, 1.09 lakh cars in Britain and 1.02 lakh cars in China.

The recall comes in the wake of similar moves by companies like Nissan and Tata Motors. In late February, Nissan recalled 9,600 units of the made-in-India Micra small car though Indian owners were not part of the campaign. Tata Motors, too, had called back 1.40 lakh Nano cars in December 2011 to replace the starter motor. But while recalls have become a regular affair with mass market car-makers, even premium brands are increasingly following the trend.

BMW booked a net profit of €4.90 billion (~ Rs. 3,320 crore) in 2011, a 51.3 percent year-on-year growth in 2011 while, the pre-tax profit rose by 52.1 percent.

Mahindra Reva NXR electric car rechristened e2o

Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles has christened their upcoming electric car 'e2o', pronounced as 'Ee-too-oh'. The Mahindra e20 is powered by a set of lithium ion batteries that give the EV a range of 100km on a single charge

Mahindra e2o
Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles has named their next generation electric vehicle as the Mahindra e2o. Revealed in 2012 by Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra, the e2o (pronounced as ‘Ee-too-oh’) is powered by a set of lithium ion batteries that give the EV a range of 100km on a single charge. The e2o can be charged from any 15-ampere plug point at home or the workplace.

To be launched soon, the e2o will be built at Mahindra’s Bangalore plant which is India’s first platinum certified automobile plant, with a rated capacity of 30,000 cars per annum.

The e2o named follows the Mahindra Reva philosophy of sustainable living. The ‘e’ in Mahindra e2o stands for the energy of the Sun, the ‘2’ stands for ‘to’ signifying  the connected technologies in the car, while ‘o’, represents ‘Oxygen’. The e2o meets Mahindra’s 5 Cs framework: Clean, Convenient, Connected, Clever and Cost Effective. According to the company, this is the first step in the creation of an entire electric vehicle value chain and ecosystem by the Mahindra Group.

2012 Hyundai Elantra Launched

At an introductory price of Rs 12.51 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base petrol version the Elantra isn't just gorgeous to look at, but offers top-of-the line comfort and convenience features, and is a major leap forward compared to its predecessor in almost every department

Hyundai Elantra launched

There and back again. The fourth generation Hyundai Elantra’s entry and early departure from Indian soil a few years ago was unfortunate but as we see it has proved to be a significant reality check for its Korean creator, who once again returns to the D segment battlefield but this time with a more able commander. And we are indeed smitten.

With the launch of its 5th generation Elantra, Hyundai hasn’t just earned more brownie points for its already successful fluidic design language but in a sense proved exactly how lethal an architecture it truly is in the form of this scrumptious looking sedan.

And the surprise doesn’t end there. Starting from the engine options on the new car, to its exhaustive features and premium interior fit and finish, the new Elantra packs in everything you’d expect from such a high-end passenger car and more.

First up are its 1,797cc petrol and 1,582cc diesel engine options, both of which are offered with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. The four cylinder petrol engine is capable of churning out a solid 149.5PS @6,500 rpm and a decent 181Nm of torque @ 4700 rpm.  The diesel unit is incidentally the same CRDi engine fitted into the new Verna that pumps out a decent 128PS @ 4000 rpm and a rather decent 265Nm of torque between 1,900-2,750 rpm.

2013 Lexus RX 350 F Sport [w/video]

2013 Lexus RX 350 F Sport
To say that the Lexus RX crossover has been the brand's sales success is an understatement. Last month, the Japanese automaker sold 7,357 units out of the brand's 18,235 total sales – nearly every other vehicle leaving a Lexus showroom is an RX.

Introduced in 1998, the RX immediately established a name for itself. While other automakers were still offering truck-like sport utility vehicles, Lexus built its new crossover on its ES sedan platform. Enthusiasts looked the other way, but the bulk of the marketplace embraced the new five-door with its very comfortable car-like ride, luxurious passenger accommodations and the brand's well-known levels of build quality and customer satisfaction. After just a few years on the market, Lexus was selling more than 100,000 units annually.

Now in its third generation and facelifted for 2013, the RX seems to be pleasing everyone – except male buyers. Even though Lexus as a whole is targeted predominantly at men, it is a well-known fact that RX crossover buyers are mostly female. To capture an even larger share of the segment, Lexus needed to give its best-seller a shot of masculinity. Enter the 2013 RX 350 F Sport.

2013 Cadillac ATS

2013 Cadillac ATS
Let’s face it: The BMW 3 Series is more vulnerable now than it has been in over two decades. The poster child of the sports sedan community is currently in the throes of some unpleasant growing pains as it tries to balance efficiency, mass-market appeal and the machine’s impressive heritage. Though lighter than its predecessor, the F30 feels heavier from behind the wheel, thanks in part to suspension tuning designed to coddle first and satisfy second. The German wunderkind is larger in every direction with more interior room. But with one surprisingly noisy cabin and a polarizing exterior design, the mighty 3 is in danger of alienating the very audience that made it king.
None of this is news to Cadillac. The overlords at General Motors have been quietly working to carve out a corner of the compact luxury segment for over five years. In that time, a horde of engineers bent under the pressure of constructing a clean-sheet design intended to give hardware like the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Infiniti G line and yes, even the BMW 3 Series something to sweat over.
The fruit of those efforts is the 2013 Cadillac ATS – a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sedan with all of the lusty lines of the larger CTS. Light-weight, properly balanced and loaded with some of the best connectivity tech in the industry, GMhas something to be proud of here, but the ATS may not be the Nurburgring-conquering, 3 Series-slaying white knight we’ve all been hoping for.

2013 Cadillac ATS side view2013 Cadillac ATS front view2013 Cadillac ATS rear view Ask David Masch, the chief engineer behind the ATS, why he sees this sedan as significant, and he’ll cut straight to the chase. Masch says the compact luxury segment is the most important market for any automaker that wants to engage the well-monied brands of the world. Models in this class fall into a certain sweet spot that’s unlike anything else in the automotive industry, serving as a catchall for buyers moving up to a luxury purchase for the first time and those stepping down from a more expensive model for something a little more engaging to drive. Masch fully expects the ATS to serve as the volume model for Cadillac moving forward, out pacing the SRX and even the CTS family in short time.
